American Village and Its Origins
On the western coast of central Okinawa, the town of Chatan is home to American Village (Mihama), one of the island’s most distinctive areas. Built on land that was formerly a US military installation, the development opened in the late 1990s as a commercial and entertainment district that draws on American architectural references. The result is a seaside complex of shopping centers, restaurants, a Ferris wheel, and murals that feels unlike anywhere else in Japan. The American presence in Okinawa dates to the end of World War II, and the cultural exchange between service members and local Okinawans has shaped Chatan’s identity for decades.
Sunset Beach
Adjacent to American Village, Sunset Beach lives up to its name. The west-facing shoreline offers some of Okinawa’s best sunset views, with the sun dropping into the East China Sea on clear evenings. The beach has showers, changing facilities, and lifeguard stations during swimming season (April through October). A seaside boardwalk runs along the coast, linking commercial areas with quieter stretches of waterfront. Walking at dusk, with the Ferris wheel lit up behind and the ocean ahead, captures Chatan’s particular atmosphere.
Shopping and Entertainment
American Village is organized around interconnected shopping complexes, including Depot Island and surrounding arcades. The retail mix includes fashion boutiques, souvenir shops, surf gear, imported American goods, and local Okinawan craft stores. The architecture is deliberately playful, with brightly painted facades and oversized signage. Entertainment options include a cinema, bowling alley, arcade centers, and the landmark Ferris wheel. On weekends, live music and seasonal events add to the energy, drawing local families, off-duty military personnel, and tourists.
A Food Scene Between Two Cultures
Chatan’s dining reflects its cross-cultural identity. American-style restaurants serve burgers, steaks, and tacos alongside Okinawan establishments offering the island’s own traditions. The overlap produces distinctive results: taco rice (a local invention combining Mexican-American flavors with Japanese rice), spam musubi with an Okinawan twist, and izakayas where Orion beer flows alongside goya champuru and rafute (braised pork belly). The seaside location means fresh seafood features prominently too.
Beyond American Village
The wider town has its own character. Residential neighborhoods extend inland, and smaller beaches to the north and south offer quieter alternatives. Chatan Park provides green space and sports facilities. The central west coast location makes Chatan a practical base — Naha is about 20 minutes by car to the south, while the more rural, nature-oriented north is easily reached. The town is connected by Okinawa’s bus network, though a rental car significantly expands day trip options. Chatan offers a balance of convenience, coastal scenery, and a cultural atmosphere found nowhere else in Japan.
