Shibuya Stream and Urban Renewal
Shibuya Stream, opened in 2018, is a multifunctional complex built as part of Shibuya’s urban renewal efforts. The development revitalized the unused platform of the Kyu-Toyoko line at Shibuya Station and restored the Shibuya River, creating a vibrant space for creative workers and visitors alike.
Reviving Shibuya’s Waterways
The restoration of the Shibuya River is a key feature of Shibuya Stream. Through public and private collaboration, the area now boasts green spaces and pathways linking Shibuya to Daikanyama. The complex includes 30 stores, offices, hotels, and event halls, blending dining and relaxation with a scenic urban landscape.
A Modern Addition to Shibuya
Part of Shibuya’s ongoing transformation since 2012, Shibuya Stream follows the opening of Shibuya Hikarie and precedes the planned completion of Shibuya Station Square renovations by 2027. Developers have reversed past damage, restoring waterways and green spaces to improve the area’s sustainability and aesthetics.
Shopping and Dining Along the River
Located southeast of Shibuya Station, Shibuya Stream offers a quieter experience compared to the bustling north side. The cafes and restaurants along the restored river provide a rare outdoor dining option in Tokyo, with a European-inspired ambiance. Upstairs, visitors can find diverse dining choices, including Japanese, Thai, Italian cuisines, and elegant coffee shops.
